Arthritis is used to refer to any disorder or condition that affects joint mobility. These health issues can have a range of symptoms from pain and stiffness to redness, warmth and swelling. If it worsens, it can lessen the joint's range of motion.
A couple of specific arthritic disorders are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. Osteoarthritis is a common type of the condition that affects both the bone and cartilage of a joint. Its symptoms are often aggravated following exercise but, over time, osteoarthritis can worsen to cause constant pain, inflammation and stiffness as the joint breaks down and cartilage is worn away.
Rheumatoid arthritis is more long-lasting and is actually an autoimmune disorder that attacks the joints. Unlike osteoarthritis, the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, including inflammation and redness, are often worse after rest or prolonged disuse of the joint. Psoriatic arthritis (related to psoriasis) does not usually affect the joints quite as much as rheumatoid arthritis, but can still cause stiffness and joint pain.
